About Summer School
The Summer School programme is a post 16 learning experience that is fun, informative and positive, whilst providing training and practical work experience. It aims to connect bright enthusiastic school leavers with employers in the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel & Tourism industry. It also provides industry with an excellent source for recruiting young people on to their various apprenticeship programmes as well as filling the gaps during the holidays with part time/casual jobs.
The programme is designed to offer students aged between 16 and 19 years old, the opportunity to take part in a three week structured training programme and work placement leading to relevant qualifications that can assist in entry to work or college programmes during the summer vacation period. During the one week industry related training the students have the opportunity to obtain three professional industry related certificates, basic food hygiene, welcome host customer care and health & safety. The programme also helps to raise awareness to the opportunities in the industry to teachers and parents.
Objective of Programme
- Provide school leavers in selected regions, nationally, with the opportunity to take part in a three week structured training programme and work placement leading to relevant qualifications to assist in entry to work or college programmes.
- Offer the opportunity for summer job placements to selected students with top hospitality, tourism and leisure employers in the area, to provide a taste of the industry and an insight into the real career opportunities on offer.
- Encourage more young people to consider the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry as a first choice career either through direct employment, apprenticeships or further and higher education.
- Help the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry nationally to tackle directly the skill shortage and recruitment challenges it currently faces.
- Inform teachers about the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry, provides up to date information about the career and job opportunities and the entry routes for pupil post school education.
- Provide advice and guidance to job seekers from the local community with a view to widening access to employment.
